Establishment
Hamamatsu City Museum (Hamamatsu-shi Hakubutsukan) was established in April 1979. It stands next to Shijimizuka Remains, a national historic site. The museum was found intending to serve as a place where people can learn the path historical culture in the region took and be inspired to create a new culture. The stream of its history from primitive age to present time is comprehensively explained at the museum with displays of historical, archeological, and ethnological materials. Since Hamamatsu City merged with 12 other cities and towns in 2005, the museum consists of 14 sites.

Contents
Seasonally changing exhibitions are held in Special Exhibition Room. Its permanent exhibition introduces millions year history of Hamamatsu with displays such as a skeletal model of Naumann elephant, unearthed materials from Shijimizuka Remains, Hamakita Man and Mikkabi Man. It navigates its audiences from ancient time to present time Hamamatsu.
