Overview
The Nakaya Site is located in Negata, Hamakita-ku, overlooking plains on the right bank of the Tenryu River.
The ruin of a residence in the site dated to the Kamakura period shows evidences that it was well protected as being surrounded with a wall and equipped with a mound inside (4m in width and 2m in depth). Its extraordinary scale for residences in the periods, 160m (E-W) by 200m (N-S), indicates that it was inhabited a powerful local figure.
A wooden saddle made in the same era was unearthed from its eastern part. It is painted black with lacquer and has traces of being decorated with raden (mother-of-pearl inlay). It was the first time in the nation that a wooden saddle decorated with raden which preserved its full shape was unearthed. In addition, mokkan, wood strips, written unique letters and curses was found under the saddle. A rite is believed to be held on an occasion of river improvement construction.
